From vintage furs to impressive millinery collections, the 27th annual Ottawa Vintage sale exhibited unique items from the 1900's to 1970's. Vintage fanatics arrived at the Fairmont Château Laurier and scoured through the endless racks, searching for their next coveted treasure. Photographer John Smith & I shopped the racks and also spotted many stylish vintage lovers.

Throughout the past year and a half, I've had the pleasure of working alongside fabulous fashion lovers in the Ottawa area. Interns are such an intrinsic part of a successful production, on set or at an event, they are the second set of eyes - tweeking everything to perfection, adding essence to the mood while fuelling the creative flow. Whether they "guest blog" or assist on set, it is always a pleasure to collaborate with them. Here are some fun facts about these die hard fashionistas, enjoy!

Occupation: I am a Nursing student and I also have two part time jobs, one for a low income housing company and the other is for a mobile phone company.

When did you first start shooting?

I think I got my first "camera" when I was 12 - it was 2 megapixels, so awful now, but I loved it. I used to force my sisters into these gawdy fashion shoots, haha, but it was so much fun! I think I was having so much fun, I didn't realize I was developing such a lovely skill and art form.

Favorite thing to do in Ottawa?

I love the downtown core: I love the people, the beauty and the food (I'm a sucker for beaver tails). I spend a lot of my time exploring that area, usually with my camera, and enjoying every minute of it.

Studio Shoot!

A few months ago, I had a full day shoot at Studio 8 Dalpé in Hull; 12 hours of models, make-up, clothes, jewelry, camera clicks and helpful interns describe the frantically fun day I experienced with a team of 15 amazing people! Coffee breaks, treats and loads of laughs were shared on set, check out the behind-the-scenes photos by Tania of Taste of Fashion.

Talented designer, Isobel Khoury of Bel Bridal designed this beautiful crown along with an earring & necklace set for the "Ice Queen" look. To complete the theme, Ottawa Glam executed amazing hairstyling and make-up on model, Angelika which really brought forth the concept of glacial royalty.

Holly was such a pleasure to shoot, I met her at The Candy Store Ottawa and absolutely loved her style and truly was intrigued by her visual merchandising background. Her personality is colorful & bubbly - I absolutely love this Mademoiselle Mermaid necklace on Holly, check out the etsy shop here.

Pro-Make-up artist Ariana Assadi worked her glam magic on model, Joanne. This beauty look was inspired by urban edge, Ariana accented the shape of Joanne's eyes with an exagerated cat eye and a bold red lip for some attitude paired with sexy cascade curls.

Tokyo Fashion Week SS '12

Hello fashionistas, I am Chie, fashion blogger of Vivat Veritas. Last week, I attended Mercedes Benz Fashion Week and checked out the Shida Tatsuya show. It was my first time seeing a runway show, I was super excited to experience Tokyo Fashion Week, especially as an independent designer and seamstress! Read my guest blog on #MBFT:

For Spring-Summer 2012, Shida's collection is based on his own rendition of the "marine" look. To switch things up, he incorporates unexpected color combinations which adds a playful element to his querky naval collection.

Hot pinks and oranges intertwined with navy create an unconventionally cool look. Loose naval pants and trench coats were seen on the runway paired with sheer fabrics and alot of layering. My favorite piece was the sheer white hoodie paired with bright pink tube top. View the full collection here.

As for the accessories, I absolutely loved the big hoop pearl earrings - they were super cute. The beauty look was very minimal and natural: the models' lips were bright in hot pink and red as if the lip color was roughly applied using finger tips rather than a lip brush, which added a rugged yet unique look.

Fashion is always fun with Kania Couture! Every season local designer, Stacey Bafi-Yeboa revives the runway with her exhuberant spirit and versatile designs. Hailing from the tropics, this caribbean style collection was festive in its choice of bright colors and brilliant rhinestones. Models paraded down the runway wearing comfortably sassy designs that are functional and fashionable for day & night.

Travis Taddeo is your go-to designer for that fresh “mondo new” look. You can never go wrong with Travis Taddeo, this Montreal designer is known for his crisp aesthetic. For Spring-summer 2012, Travis offers middle eastern inspired ponchos, sheer tops, hot leather garments and funky fashions in the likes of feathers, it’s all about clean edge.

Montreal designer, Ralph Leroy took the audience into fashion storyland, enticing the crowd with the burning ascension of his latest collection - FIRE. Ralph Leroy’s collection was about the coming of age through combat, conquering the flames and at last arriving to the climax of fashion – the evergreen forest. Every garment echoed the plot of this theatrical experience. The victorious finale symbolized the release of the Queen and lastly the courtship awaits the procession of the king – Ralph Leroy. This was the most captivating show at OFW live SS ‘12!

Alexis Reyna

Robotic grunge – Alexis Reyna’s collection depicted manufactured zombies of fashion. Through his designs, Alexis demonstrates the fast forward evolution of cloth.

Bleached garments and tribal references created an anaphylactic reaction that definitely caught the attention of the crowd.

The Beauty & Fashion Gala presented by Pro Make-up artist Ariana Assadi was a great success, fashion lovers dressed up and came out to support Breast Cancer Research in full effect and enjoyed an intimate evening of glamour. Ariana showcased her jaw-dropping beauty looks alongside fabulous fashion designers and local boutiques.

Ariana Assadi’s Beauty & Fashion Gala also celebrated the launch of her new website, bringing Ottawa’s fashion crowd together to create an evening of mingling and excitement in light of her latest endeavour. Ariana Assadi is not only a Pro Make-up artist, she is a connector, linking every component of the Ottawa fashion scene together to introduce a platform for local talent in the National Capital Region.

Ariana demonstrated her versatile artistry and beautified models with various looks, denoting influences of different eras and inspirations of exotic nature.

I had so much fun interviewing british designer, Elephtheria Xenos of Elephtheria Couture back in June, her customized and made-to-measure clothing line is uniquely intriguing, read my exclusive interview with "Rhea" here. This time around, I had the pleasure of conceptualizing a photo shoot for Elephtheria's mid-season collection. From choosing locations, scouting the right model, pulling jewelry and photographing the clothing, it was truly a fashion filled adventure. Chloe was the perfect model for Elephtheria Couture, the shoot consisted of 5 looks at 5 different locations in the heart of downtown Ottawa. John Smith and fashion intern Mariella were both on set to assist and we are so pleased with the results. I can’t wait to share them with you all!

Designer, Natalya Toporova is an Ottawa native who studied Fashion Design at Richard Robinson, currently expanding in Miami, Toporova revisited the Nation’s Capital by introducing her latest luxury swimwear line to the Ottawa fashion scene. I attended her fashion show and I must say Natalya brought Miami Beach to the stage. Toporova’s swimwear designs are festive, flirty and will definitely turn heads at the beach!

Hello Stylistas, I went to the Value Village VIP event to view the new store in Stittsville before the grand opening on July 7th! VIP attendants got to shop the racks before the opening and viewed a fun fashion show produced by local stylist Justyna Barianecki-Andrzejak. Vallue Village partnered with the Canadian Diabetes Association and the Ontario Federation for Cerebral Palsy, and paid the organizations for every item that was donated on-site!

It was a splendid shopping experience, I was so anxious to go through the racks, Julie Lan from Pop Champagne was there and we had a great time! I love thrifting, it's a fantastic incentive to recycle and the most frugal way to remain uniquely stylish.

I had so much fun at the Value Village VIP event! A fashion show, clothes galore and lots of grub!

As soon as I arrived, I dropped off my bag of donations and hit the racks to stock up again!

At Value Village, I always find amazing designer brands at very affordable prices!

I found this leather vest, it's so perfect for the fall! Priced at 8.99$ only?!

It was so much fun shopping with Pop Champagne, she picks the best items! Look at her fashion finds:

It was love at first sight when I saw this skirt, I always seem to find the best fall/winter items in the summer?!

The Richard Robinson Academy of Fashion Design - Grande Première is always an exciting event to attend! A batch full of students and graduates showcase their cognitive expression in the realm of fashion to the public. It's fun to see each student’s personality emoted in their personal collection, that being said, the evening consisted of a melting pot of differing influences. Here are the fashion designs that exuded superb energy on the runway this year!

Stephanie Ross’ collection peaked massive interest and brought theatrics to the evening! Her delicate designs were stained with “blood” depicting elements of strife and persecution which surface in her both edgy and glam creations.

Yesha Raval – The very feminine “tea party” collection romanced with the perfect hues of gold and rose. Yesha Raval is a designer to lookout for!

The Sophie Latourelle collection was eye-catching! Her modern rendition of the french pantomime showcased a color scheme of neon colors juxtaposed with white & black. This perfect balance of colors adorned with fun cut-outs was definitely unique.

The energy of Arfie Lalani’s collection was more than memorable! This is the collection that brought excitement to the evening. This “fast-rider” type of collection denoted urban flare with explicit influences of Hip Hop. The notion of the "urban queen" stood out firmly and persona was of essence. His collection is to be interpreted as “boost clothing”: clothing with an edge that automatically adds that strut in your step. Arfie Lalani stole the show and won designer of the year which was well-deserved!

Hello Fashionistas, the 3^rd annual I AM FASHION show was a hit! I sent my 3 fashionistas: Kari, Kathleen & Lexie to the "I AM FASHION" show on a fashion mission and let me tell you, these ladies knocked it out of the park! They covered every aspect of the show so perfectly, that there will be a part 2 to this post tomorrow. A big Thanks to the ladies for doing such a great job! Kari & Lexie took amazing photographs alongside writer, Kathleen Black. Kathleen was out & about getting the scoop on the "I AM FASHION" show happenings, here is her fashion commentary. Fashionistas were out in style Saturday night for the much anticipated I AM FASHION: Rip The Fab Lane! The 3^rd annual event at the NAC showcased new lines from talented Canadian designers, Geneviève Couture, Frash by Isobel Walker, ImFresh, INMYSKYVVYS by Lynn M. Sainté, only to name a few!

We caught up with the ladies behind it all, Gwen Madiba and Grace Mayele, who were looking stunning and confident. “It’s a stress-free, fun night,” Gwen told us, saying the show is about self-love and love for others. “Everybody can feel confident, whether you’re thicker, thinner, or whatever your origin or background may be. If you got it then flaunt it.”

Valerie Makanda’s fearless creations were jaw dropping! The designer says I B I S M (I believe in something more) is more than a brand - it’s an attitude and lifestyle!

Miikali by Juliana Giraldo was breathtaking! The Columbian-born designer’s ready-to-wear line is feminine, fresh and fun!

Forget about having a typical wedding - Genevieve Couture’s dresses are perfect for the funky bride. The Greek goddess dress was one of my favorite pieces of the night, a very powerful and majestic statement!

Lilac Lingerie Boutique showcased cute flirty pieces that are fresh & fun for the summer! Loved the burst of color on the runway!

Frash jewelry is so orginal! "A fresh take on trash", the Frash jewelry fall 2011 collection consisted of tribal influences mixed with rock n' roll, translated into chunky pieces and sharp edges! I love Frash!

Thierry Kasende offered a sneak preview of his new label Pride and Ego. The collection’s smart outfits are accessorized perfectly for the confident working man.

Squares, triangles, patterns! African inspired INMYSKYVVYS by Lynn M. Sainté is so dynamic, the fantastic pairing with Gazamba jewelry by Laudia Yambala was a match made in heaven. The HUGE earrings pair perfectly with the festive outfits! This collection was full of spice, I had so much fun watching these girls dancing and enjoying their finale!

ImFresh! I don’t know what had more personality - the models or the clothes… both were fresh!

Every outfit in the TFR collection by Gwen Madiba & Co. has its own expression and individual identity. “It’s about being all over,” explains Gwen, “and being fabulous and loving yourself.”

Gwen Madiba is an inspiration to young women! The talented model/entrepreneur/activist was featured in the Women’s Executive Network’s list of 2010’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women in Canada. “It’s important for me to give back”, she tells us, referring to the two charities receiving proceeds from “I AM FASHION” this year. “I want to bring a certain consciousness to issues around the world surrounding women and children.”

Designer Thierry Kasende’s son Noah was a total hit - dancing and catching ladies’ attention all night! “He’s really into fashion”, explains Thierry, “I think it’s pretty cool that he’s involved. He’ll be part of this legacy in the future.”

Superstar model, Willy Monfret was the celebrity guest of the night and had the ladies swooning all evening!

It’s always great to see fashion created and celebrated in Ottawa, and everyone had such a good time. I think my favorite part was hearing all the women cheering when the male models finally came out! Everyone looked beautiful and had so much fun. As Marcia B. states, “The I AM FASHION show is a definite reaffirmation of Ottawa talent.” I definitely agree, and already can’t wait for next year’s!

The Angie’s Models & Talent showcase was fantastic! Fashion & talent agents from Montreal, New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Japan and Thailand were present to scout the Angie’s Models & Talent roster. Paul Weber from MGM Studios in Los Angeles was seen in the front row as models strutted down the runway at the Canadian War Museum!

I loved Angie’s upbeat energy! She was looking and feeling great, kept the audience enticed and most importantly her combative spirit was very inspiring!

My favorite “ImFresh” item would be the “Pretty Boy Smile” v-neck t-shirt, it’s a simple design that exudes a high level of self-esteem!

The “I AM FASHION” show is back in gear for its 3^rd annual showcase on Saturday May 28^th 2011 at the National Arts Centre! This year’s show promises to be a fashion exhibition like no other! Gwen Madiba & Within Essence Productions are ready to deliver once again an evening of infectious fashions. I am excited for this event! The National Capital Region will be buzzing with stylistas at this notable soirée, if you are an Ottawa fashionista, you must attend. Arrive fierce and camera-ready!

The designer line-up will showcase luxury lingerie from Lilac Lingerie Boutique, designs by Anomal Couture, Frash Femme by Isobel Walker, only to name a few! Gwen Madiba will also be showing her newest creation, TFR by Gwen Madiba & Co.!

TORONTO ALTERNATIVE FASHION WEEK 2011

Hello fashionistas, i would like to introduce my guest blogger Stéphanie Aujean! Stéphanie went to FAT to get the inside scoop on the latest alternative fashions and now she is here to report! I would like to Thank her for all the amazing photos she has taken. Isn't she cute?! Stéphanie is an amazing designer from Paris, currently residing in Toronto! "Paper Dolls" is a very poetic collection conceived by Breeyn McCarney. Her designs are made of paper, one of them being chinese lantern paper! The models roamed on the catwalk with their arms outstretched, stiff like wax dolls which was very thematic! The decorative patterns on the dresses were beautifully intricate!

The Heidi Ackerman & Lindsay Sinclair show began with the projection of a very beautiful movie produced by Thirty9Steps. This capsule collection is very promising and attractive! The designers convey lightness through loose materials and shapes which are translated onto long floating capes and inflated raincoats seen in the collection. Most of the garments are tightened by elastics or wooden accessories which come to support, strengthen and sublimate the body. The contrast between these antithetic materials reminded me of nature and more particularly Karl Blossfeld's work.

Androgynous, inspired by a man’s cloakroom and a woman’s fragility, Aimée Tobolka’s collection seduced me! Sexy and fresh, these garments were given rhythm by a set of transparencies, neutral tones and pure materials such as silk. Contrary to the rather experimental designers at FAT, Aimée Tobolka’s approach is simple which set her collection apart from others. I can easily see myself wearing these clothes this summer!

ICA Watermelon will be showing at FAT Toronto as one of the featured designers on Day 2 of Natural Currencies, where sustainable fashion fuels the creativity behind fashion designs! Berlin designer, Julia Knüpfer is the talent behind ICA Watermelon and describes her clothing line as carefully handmade high fashion knit & crochet garments that work correctly in symbiosis with the green movement. I am excited for the ICA Watermelon runway show, it will be a chance to experience a taste of Berlin fashion with an ecological approach!

FAT Toronto is the perfect platform for unique designers such as Julia Knüpfer, It is not your conventional fashion week, it’s a unique festival that demonstrates an experimental approach to the fashion & arts scene. Most importantly, it is open to the public!

How did you come up with the name ICA Watermelon?

ICA Watermelon is an abbreviation for “I carried a watermelon”, the famous quote from one of my favorite movies Dirty Dancing!

Is ICA Watermelon new to the Canadian fashion scene?

It will be my first time in Canada and I am very excited to be part of FAT Toronto! I am eager to share the vision of ICA Watermelon with Canadian consumers as I really like the fact that Canada is very green conscious which works perfectly with the values of ICA Watermelon.

What is ICA Watermelon’s affinity with the green approach to fashion?

It’s about offering attractive designs of high quality with more meaning behind the garments! The message behind my eco-designs is that fashion is not superficial, there is a deeper insight behind the designs of ICA Watermelon. It’s about doing something good for the world and contributing to humanity!

What are the musical influences behind ICA Watermelon?

It’s hard to pinpoint one musical influence behind ICA Watermelon but I would definitely say Scandinavian music and songs from Denmark & Norway fuel the creativity behind ICA Watermelon. This type of music is not very extroverted but very content!

What can we expect to see in the "Soft Bonds" collection at |FAT| Toronto?

The dynamics of this collection will be very different from my past work! I will be exploring the contrast between themes such as independence, connectivity, freedom, friendship and love. Get prepared to see floating fabrics intertwined with heavy wool pieces!
